Rule #1: Don’t let stagnation in innovation slow you down.

Teachers often dismiss student-led learning because it is difficult to track and messy. As a long-standing PBL educator and curriculum developer, I know the struggle is real. PBL can be difficult to systematize because students must take responsibility for their research and design projects. PBL can also be time-consuming as it provides a framework for teacher and student feedback loops that is essential for development growth. PBL makes it difficult to track matriculation standards as students might have different competencies at different times. At the end of it all, educators are responsible for measuring student engagement as well as academic development. However, there are many management tools that can help make personalized learning in your classroom a reality.

As an educator at THINK Global School, the world’s first traveling high school, finding a learning management system in Saudi Arabia was easy, but finding a good management system to track data in a truly learner-centric environment was one of the main challenges we faced as a mobile entity. Students are more empowered to plan their learning, which is where other systems can run into problems. We would like to ask how we can “streamline” learning in a world where students have the power to decide their own driving questions, and what projects they want to work on. How can we track academic growth and meaningful engagement? How can we create and implement a management program that encourages student-led learning, rather than inhibit it? The key to streamlining student, parent, teacher, administrator tracking – these systems can foster student-driven connectivity.

Rule #2: Use learning management systems to support student-led education.

Learning management software is becoming more popular in schools to help them organize their curriculum and track student academic progress. It is not easy to find a management system that can be used by all users, including teachers and students. It is well-known that management systems can become a burden on administrators, teachers, and students if they are not implemented properly.

Software implementation can be problematic, especially when trying to keep true to student-led curriculum design. Many LMSs actually work against the method. There are many learning management systems that offer directives and curriculum, but ultimately, they make it difficult for students to manage their own learning, develop their skills, and track their progress towards matriculation.

We undermine personalized learning by requiring students to complete projects. Students are no longer the owners of their learning but rather passengers. Be careful when you sign up for any learning management software in Saudi Arabia. We don’t need any prescriptive software that could undermine the essence of student-led learning.

Teachers who think personalized learning is impossible to manage and track in their classrooms are wrong. Teachers love to innovate and teach, but it’s easy to want to be the hero of our classroom. Teachers who allow students to become the heroes of their learning are the real heroes of ed. That happens when students are in control of their learning.
